Now with more kittens!

3 May

Growing up I was one kitten-obsessed little girl. My mom is a full-fledged cat lady of the first order and as such has mystical power over them. She’s placed more cats in homes than I can remember, including giving some to my friends. Over the years we’ve placed Oscar with Leonard, Loki with the Waltons, and Mochi with Scott. Countless cats and kittens have found their way to loving homes through my mother.

Cat Lady Pride!

It’s from her that I’ve learned to give our cats pills, clean their ears of mites, and bottle feed abandoned kittens. I have seen her talk a cats out of a frenzy and wild feral cats have eaten from the palm of her hand. She is currently the caretaker of a feral colony of cats in our city’s blighted downtown district and actively works the trap-neuter-return program.

Sweet Tinkerbell

Since Tinkerbell, my cat BFF and companion for over 16 years, recently passed away we’ve been looking for some new companions to bring into the home. The family dynamics have shifted unpleasantly with Tinky gone and Peaches and Zorro have become more aggressive and destructive.

This past weekend we visited a friend of Anthony’s who happens to have two litters of kittens nearly ready to go to loving homes.

I instantly liked Anthony’s friend because I could tell he is a devoted cat person. He has taken excellent care of these kittens.

How adorable are they?!

We chose two of these to share our home. I picked out a name for the girl kitten right away, but was stuck on a name for her brother. I asked Twitter to help me out and got some excellent suggestions: Laurant, Chairman Meow, Ted Kennedy, Lucifer, (Kevin) Bacon, and Dewey. All great suggestions, but Anthony got the final say.

Meet Poppy and Jupiter.

Kittens! So hard to resist. It’s a good thing we have a baby and 4 cats at home already to restrain me.

Oh, my goodness, I want them. But I’m sure that Ollie would smoosh them with kisses, like he does our dogs. I doubt that they would like that very much! And Ian is incredibly allergic, as am I. So while I love cats, I suppose that I have to love them from afar.

Not a lot you can do about allergies. 😦 Fortuantely cats are great pets to have with babies around because they never let themselves be abused too much before they run away.

ONG OMG OMG OMG! Congratulations on your new kittens! We went “window shopping” at the local rescue last weekend and I wanted kittens so bad that I’m pretty sure that it’s some sort of sad misplaced maternal instinct, but f-it! I love kittens! Sadly, I think Eartha would want to kick some bootay if we brought a new critter into the house, even if it were to be a wee helpless kitten. BAH!

“Window Shopping” is exactly how we ended up with Zorro! It’s a dangerous game, I tells ya.

Eartha may not mind if you get two kittens. It’s when you get just one that the older cats are constantly pestered. Two kittens are usually sufficient to entertain each other.

OMG sooo cute! I adore Poppy’s coloring!

I just found my way here via Parent Hacks and will hope to come back from time to time. Sorry to hear about your kitty BFF, but the new sweeties look like a lot of fun!

Thanks, Julie! I’m looking forward to having kittens around the house again.
