Baby

1 Jul

Isobel plays with our neighbors across the street quite a bit. The kids are all older than her but are generous enough to share their toys and include Isobel in their games. One morning while we were visiting Isobel spied Greta’s baby doll and she fell in love. “Baby! Baby! Baby!” she said over and over while she clutched the doll to her chest. It was so sad when we had to go and we removed Greta’s doll from her clutches.

(Greta, by the way, is only about four, and was extremely nice about lending Isobel her doll while we were over there.)

Later that day we visited Mom Mom and Papa and what did Mom Mom have? Why, and old baby doll, cleaned and ready to go for Isobel. My daughter has a guardian angel, I think. And her name is Mom Mom.

She has been inseparable from that baby. She carries it everywhere. We’re teaching her about hands, fingers, toes, and facial features using this doll. Unfortunately it came from my mom’s house naked. Mom found that doll somewhere but it didn’t have any clothes. Not that Isobel cares.

The next day I took Isobel by Mama Juani’s she decided it was her mission to find clothes for this indecent doll. When I picked Isobel up her baby was wearing a giant outfit that covered her from the neck down. It was a little ridiculous, but Isobel didn’t seem to care.

Underneath the ridiculously huge outfit was a pair of pink panties that we call ‘chonies.’ I stripped the huge outfit from the baby’s body and Isobel carries her around wearing just the chonies. It’s easier for Isobel to hang on to and also easier for us to teach her the names of body parts.

Ever since I showed her the framed photo of Kingston the Waltons gave me she has been obsessed with babies in general. This baby doll must seem like a miracle to her because it’s a baby that I actually let her hold. The last time Kingston came over she had a great time touching his nose and saying ‘baby! baby!’ but that’s as far as she got to touching him. She says ‘baby!’ whenever she sees herself in the mirror, and sometimes she likes to walk around, touching older children on the head and calling them ‘baby!’, too. Sometimes kids laugh but sometimes, especially the littler ones, they are not amused.

Isobel likes babies so much she gives them her highest form of affection: pets.

It’s too bad you live far away. I have a feeling that Chico would be her favorite thing EVAR.

I’m glad you post pics often- she grows so much in between visits.

I’m glad no one seems to mind me constant baby photos. I’m a little ridiculous sometimes. 🙂

Kyra loves baby dolls too. When I babysat her there were two so I had her take care of both of them to get her to see what it’ll be like when her mom has the twins, but I don’t think she understands at all yet.

Everyone has a baby at their house for Kyra, her favourite is at Aunti Barb’s, and she always gets so upset that she can’t take it with her when she leaves

When my cousin Liz was pregnant with her second baby, Sam, we kept telling Victoria that soon their family was going to get a little baby like Isobel. Victoria took this to mean that Isobel was coming to live with them and she was SO EXCITED. She kept saying, “When do we get Isobel?!”

She is so freakin’ cute, it kills me. And Kingston – that smile made my heart melt!

Isobel looks just like the new character, Bonnie, in Toy Story 3!!!
