It’s Time for New Adventures

13 Apr

Last Friday I told my principal that this year would be my last year as school librarian.

I want to stay at home with my daughter.

There are many things I love about the job, and many things I’ll miss, but I’ve been feeling stagnant and ready for a change. I will work through June.

I love domesticity and at heart a part of me has always wanted to stay home. A larger part of me wanted to be in the library, of course, until Isobel came along.

We are so lucky that Anthony found work in this dismal economy. We are going to be taking a huge pay cut by going down to one income, but we can mange. We’ve managed all these years on less. While home I plan to develop my etsy business, do more portrait sittings, and sell more photos to Getty. It won’t replace my income totally, but it will help. When it comes time for Isobel (and any possible future siblings) to start school I’ll have that foundation to grow my businesses further.

By going now I’ll leave this job knowing the district will have the funds to replace me, unlike when I was laid off last year. Big changes often come with mixed emotion, and I am sad about leaving at times, but at other times I’m jubilant with anticipation.

It’s going to be an interesting summer.

Don’t forget that I’m happy to answer any and all intertube related questions you’ll have.

Well, I’ll answer any question you have, but I can’t guarantee I’ll be right if it’s a complex calculus problem.

ACK! I’m so excited for you (and soooo jealous!!! First the apron, then the undroos, now you get to be a stay-at-home mom!) I have thought so many times about quitting my job and being a stay-at-home mom but then I remind myself that I’m not married, don’t have kids and being a stay-at-home single mom to two cats would make people stop taking me seriously. Unless I was rich. People always take rich people seriously for some stupid reason. But I’m not. So, I keep going to work…and buying lottery tickets.

But seriously, CONGRATS! I’m very very excited for you.

So exciting! And so good for you and Isobel. It’s tough going from two incomes to one but you guys can totally do it. We briefly discussed me going back to work before I got pregnant with Olivia since our home business was floundering a little. Then I got pregnant and Stephen luckily went full time at his current job. Soooo we decided it would be better for me to stay home. Best decision we made – it’s hard and things are tight but it’s oh so good for our family.

The best of luck to your business adventures and I hope with all my heart this works out for you guys.

Congrats on making the decision to do what you want! Being able to stay at home is a wonderful thing, you won’t regret it. Well maybe during the terrible twos, the “are you kidding me? You were such a good kid threes, did that really just come out of your mouth 4’s, loose your attitude fives. That’s all just a joke. 🙂 It’s a fabulous thing to be able to be at home and be in the full daily routine with your child. Kudos to you! Enjoy it!

I’m officially quitting as well and will be staying home with my daughter starting early May. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do as well but couldn’t afford to do before.

Everyone has said it already, but wow, how exciting! I can’t imagine anyone looking back and thinking “Oh, I should have worked more…” 🙂

I said it on Twitter, but I’ll repeat it: good for you! I really admire your choice to do what’s right for you and for your fam, AND to make the conscious choice to live well on less – making priorities out of the things that matter most to you (money and all that not being at the top of the list). Go you!!

  22. themomsmith at 8:57 pm #
