Last Haul of the Season

24 Jan

Ah, summer. That magical time when I visited the Farmer’s Market each week and planned our meals accordingly. Now that the market has closed and the local fruit stands have boarded up their windows, I have only my memories and occasional trips to the local remate to tide me over. It’s tough to get there with the kid, and cold and muddy, too, and I have a hard time struggling to carry all those purchases the distance I have to walk back to the car. I can’t wait until May.

These photos are from the last market of the season back in October. This trip was extra special because I was able to fit some thrifting in that day, too.

The plates, bowls and hangers are all thrifted. Purchases that day included green beans, pea shoots, pomegranates, raw almonds, peaches, grape tomatoes, hummus, red pepper tapenade, and a butternut squash.

The sunflower seeds pictured here were actually grown in my garden. Earlier in the season Isobel and I checked out a local nursery’s booth at the Farmer’s Market and they had a display with soil, a little peat pot and seeds. We happened to run into my cousin’s family there, so Isobel and her cousin Victoria got to plant their own sunflower seeds. We watered it and placed it above the sink and two days later it sprouted. It was so magical for Isobel and I to watch. We watched it bloom and eventually cut it down. Isobel helped me pluck the seeds from the flower head. It was incredibly easy and required little more than water on my part.

The amber jar and wooden salt and pepper shakers in the background were also purchased secondhand that day, along with the Pyrex, mushroom cruets, and very awesome (but naturally, inaccurate) vintage dinosaur place mat. I picked up the letter sorter for Isobel and milk glass dish below for a song.

I miss you, summer.

Follow Friday: Snuggle Time

14 Oct

It’s my birthday Sunday and I’m going to be celebrating it by crossing off a rather large item of my Life List. I’m very excited for a woman of my advanced age. Anthony and I will be kicking off our adventure by waking up at four in the freaking morning tomorrow, a sentence I can’t even type without involuntarily shaking my head no no no no.

I keep my camera close at hand, and one of my favorite parts of staying home with the baby is capturing heart-meltingly adorable moments like the photo above where she’s tucking in her baby deer. Her blanket, pillow, pillowcase, and even the beloved baby deer are all thrift store scores.

Have a great weekend!

Scrapbook: Tea Time

4 Oct

Anthony was right.  Zorro and Poppy do love the jellyfish tent. Fortunately, they love it for more than just scratching and attacking. Sometimes they like to be civilized.

He kind of reminds me of Jabba the Hutt here. Surveying his domain.

“You guys don’t mind if my butt is in the frame, right? Great.”

I call this expression, “American Gothic if it were to take place in a jellyfish tent surrounded by a child’s tea set and enacted by animals.” You know, art.

Have I mentioned that Poppy is kind of a spaz?

She’s a cute spaz, at least.

Big Girl Bed

28 May

We are a long way off from Isobel needing a Big Girl Bed but when I saw this beauty shining in the sun on a Saturday morning, I knew it was worth a second look. Anthony, kind man that is is, pulled over.

The woman holding the yardsale wasn’t messing around. She had tables full of lovely antiques, all over priced, so I was nervous to ask about the bed. If she was charging $60 for Carnival glass I could only imagine what she’d want for a brass bed. She came up to me when she saw I was using a pink vintage Samsonite carry-on bag for a purse. I sheepishly engaged in conversation about it while realizing she was justified in charging more to someone who knew the value of an antique. Note to self: don’t advertise your vintage savvy at yardsales.

Isobel’s little face must have softened her heart because when I asked about the bed she was willing to let it go for a hundred bucks. I was floored. She was going to put it in a consignment shop for three hundred dollars but she liked us. Or at least, she liked Isobel.

We wandered through the rest of the antiques a bit and told her we’d think about it. As I said, Isobel won’t need it for a couple years and we could always just use one of the (admittedly not very attractive) beds my family has in storage. We talked about it and talked about it and the next day we woke up early and went back and bought it.

Decorating Isobel’s bedroom is on my life list. Buying this bed was the first step.
