Follow Friday: Giant Yard Sale

30 Sep

Once a year my parents’ neighbors hold a giant yard sale. Their house sits on two lots and their entire front lawn takes up one of them. They divide the lawn into plots and people rent spots and set up shop. I always find great things, and this was the sale where we found those vintage books I was telling you about. Although I didn’t buy what is shown in the first three photos (though I would have loved to take it all home except for the mirror), I did buy the succulent and the gorgeous silver scroll work dish. Honestly, I really wish I would have bought Dragon Dominoes for the cover art alone.

What is Follow Friday? It’s a Twitter meme that I have taken a couple steps further.  Learn more about it in my FAQ. See my nomination for a Shorty Award for Follow Friday here. You can read more Follow Friday goodness here.

Thrift Store Score: The Rocking Horse

8 Aug

We got this baby for five bucks at a neighbor’s yard sale. Five bucks! We’ve been looking for a rocking horse for ages, and although Isobel’s pretty much outgrown it, we can save it for the next kid and then pass it on. That’s not to say Isobel doesn’t use it. She’s just more likely to put necklaces around its neck and talk to it rather than ride it.

The hair has matted into dreads, which I think is pretty funny. Someone spent a lot of money on this when it was new. It was purchased at a fancy homemade toy store in the foothills.

;Here’s Isobel trying it out.

lIt’s really sturdy and can even handle the weight of a small adult. Don’t ask me how I know that.

For the Love of Brobee

4 Jan

I had kind of a little break down yesterday but some banjo from Beck Hansen and the comfort of a grilled cheese sandwich went a long way toward restoring peace in my soul. We also had a visit from our friend Brandon and he bought me one of the most awesome shirts I’ve ever seen. Brandon himself thought it was the nerdiest shirt ever—at least, he thought that up until I introduced him to the Sci-Five.

(For those in the area, Brandon is having a yard sale either this weekend or next, and it’s going to be full of nerdy goodness. Let me know if you’re interested and I’ll send you the details. Movies, games, posters, that sort of thing.)

We had another restless night with Isobel. I’m definitely coming down with her cold and I’m hoping it will maintain that level of ick that is gross but still possible to function through. I’m too busy at work to take sick days.

Yesterday I got an email from a Viking who shall remain anonymous. It contained a link to a petition to bring back Yo Gabba Gabba. While it doesn’t seem that YGG is in any danger of being cancelled, Nickelodeon has not aired all of the last two seasons and season four has yet to be ordered. Not only is this crappy for the fans, but it’s even worse for the employees who kind of sort of need to know if they need to look for another job or not.

I certainly don’t want them to have to look for a new job, but they have to feed their families, and if Nickelodeon is going to keep them hanging, then well… how about this–don’t keep them hanging, Nickelodeon. It’s kind of dick move.

I surfed the YGG fansite, Gabba Friends, extensively when I was looking for information about seeing YGG Live. Apparently they have set up a petition to let Nickelodeon know that its viewers strongly support the show.

I signed it proudly, and if you appreciate Yo Gabba Gabba, you should sign it, too. Thanks, Anonymous Viking!

Big Girl Bed

28 May

We are a long way off from Isobel needing a Big Girl Bed but when I saw this beauty shining in the sun on a Saturday morning, I knew it was worth a second look. Anthony, kind man that is is, pulled over.

The woman holding the yardsale wasn’t messing around. She had tables full of lovely antiques, all over priced, so I was nervous to ask about the bed. If she was charging $60 for Carnival glass I could only imagine what she’d want for a brass bed. She came up to me when she saw I was using a pink vintage Samsonite carry-on bag for a purse. I sheepishly engaged in conversation about it while realizing she was justified in charging more to someone who knew the value of an antique. Note to self: don’t advertise your vintage savvy at yardsales.

Isobel’s little face must have softened her heart because when I asked about the bed she was willing to let it go for a hundred bucks. I was floored. She was going to put it in a consignment shop for three hundred dollars but she liked us. Or at least, she liked Isobel.

We wandered through the rest of the antiques a bit and told her we’d think about it. As I said, Isobel won’t need it for a couple years and we could always just use one of the (admittedly not very attractive) beds my family has in storage. We talked about it and talked about it and the next day we woke up early and went back and bought it.

Decorating Isobel’s bedroom is on my life list. Buying this bed was the first step.
